ACTIVITIES
THIVIERS

The town of Thiviers, in the north-east of the Dordogne, is typical of its region in style, springing from Roman origins and developing into a walled town from the 11th centuty. It has all the charm for which the rural towns of the Dordogne are known. It lies on a hill overlooking lovely rolling countryside of lush green fields and large areas of woodland.

Thiviers is a lively and attractive rural town which has an exceptionally good organic market held on Saturdays. Thiviers may be a rural town but has plenty on offer to keep you entertained. There are some excellent restaurants, a great selection of local shops and most amenities can be found in town.

BRANTOME

16 miles from Thiviers, Brantome is an attractive town near the northern edge of the Dordogne department, sometimes known as the Venice of the Dordogne. It has a nice mix of medieval and renaissance architecture to admire.

But it is the situation of Brantome on the river Dronne, that encircles a large part of the town, that adds most to its attraction - the river is calm and gentle at this point, covered with lilies, and sheltered by weeping willows.and it is very pleasant to walk along the edge of the river and through the gardens.

PERIGUEUX

25 miles from Thiviers, Perigueux is located on the banks of the river Isle. The town is famous for its roman/byzantine cathedral and its wonderful medieval city. It offers many parks including Parc des Arenes (built out of the ruins of a genuine Roman arena) and has also an 18-hole golf course.

And also in the area...

A short drive away you can also visit the WWII Memorial Village at Oradour-sur-Glane, the fortified castle at Pompadour with its racecourse, the 'grottes de Vilars' and the beautiful Château de Jumilhac and gardens open all year. Historic Limoges `City of the Arts of Fire' with its porcelain factories, market and fine buildings is also within easy reach.
